Samsung Galaxy Tab Active2 in the test: the outdoor expert

Samsung calls this Galaxy Tab Active2 a “business tablet” and means a robust outdoor Device that is equipped to withstand all the hardships: in the factory, in the delivery van, in dirty environments and in the rain – and that all the time. Here the Galaxy Tab Active2 can actually show its strengths. The tablet is waterproof and dustproof according to IP 68 – certification, so it is completely protected against the ingress of foreign bodies and against permanent immersion. In addition, there is the rubberized protective cover “Protective Cover +”, so that the device can withstand bumps and falls from a height of up to 1.2 meters. The guideline for this is the US military standard MIL-STD – 810 G.

A special feature that is already striking today is the replaceable battery. To do this, simply open the back of the housing and have full access to the interior. An S-Pen stylus with interchangeable pushpins is included as standard, which is firmly held in a holder on the protective cover. In general, the case is rock solid and of high quality. The surface is grippy enough, but the grooves known from some other outdoor devices are missing. On the side of the case there is a contact point for accessories such as a keyboard, on the lower frame there is a USB Type-C interface (USB 2.0), a headphone jack and a mono speaker.

The rest of the equipment is not quite as rich: The internal memory amounts to 16 GByte, but there are more 6 GB already occupied by Android 9 and the Samsung apps. An expansion with a microSD memory card up to 256 GByte is possible. Connectivity ensure WiFi 802. 11 ac, Bluetooth 4.2 and LTE with a maximum of 300 Mbit / s. NFC is also on board. The cameras are enough for snapshots, there is not much more in it. The main camera has an 8 megapixel sensor with flash, but no optical image stabilizer. The selfie camera has a 5 megapixel sensor. Photos in daylight are ok, but twilight photos are hardly usable.

Only mediocre in terms of performance and display

With the Samsung eight-core processor Exynos 7870 you get mediocre performance, but sufficient for everyday tasks. As long as you only use the Galaxy Tab Active2 for web surfing, multimedia and simpler work applications, the performance is good enough. You can get demanding 3D games with the Mali-T 830 – Graphics chip hardly to run, the benchmark results are all quite poor. Our large test PDF loads the tablet in around 16 seconds, current top devices need a third of the time. The 3 GB of RAM are sufficient for multitasking. Overall, the performance is ok, but there may be minor delays.

The IPS-LC display gets – from us very untypical for Samsung – only the rating “satisfactory “. There is an HD plus resolution of 1 on an 8 inch screen diagonal. 280 times 800 pixels, so the pixel density is quite measly 189 ppi. The image is not too sharp. The maximum brightness of the display is 462 Candela per square meter. This is solid, but a little too little for a dedicated outdoor tablet under the bright sun. The checkerboard contrast is 97: 1, that's pretty bad. The standard RGB color space is displayed almost completely, the extended DCI-P3 color space is almost 90 percent. However, the display is sufficient for a work tablet.

The display could be better and the performance is only sufficient for less demanding tasks. Picture: Samsung

Cordless runner and king of mobility

The Samsung Galaxy Tab Active2 shines in the battery rating and achieves the best value in the test. The 4th 450 – mAh battery provides power for the whole day. In the video test with medium display brightness, the tablet 15, 5 hours through, with simulated internet use it is 15 hours. Charging the battery with the included 10 – Watt power supply goes neatly, in 2: 46 hours it is fully operational again. The Active2 is a true endurance runner when it comes to mobility.

A fair price for outdoor functionality

The Samsung Galaxy Tab Active2 T 395 (SM-T 395 NZKA) you can currently get for just under 400 Euro , This is an acceptable price for the special equipment and performance. However, if you only want a good tablet for your living room or desk, you will find better offers – also in the Samsung range. The Active2 is above all robust and versatile.
