HP Omen X 2S 15 in the test
A few years ago, Hewlett-Packard breathed new life into its gaming division with its Omen series. The current flagship is the HP Omen X 2S 15 – dg 0070 ng, that in our test not only with excellent equipment, but also with excellent performance values to shine white – but it is also very expensive ( for price comparison ). The special feature of the gaming bolide is the second small display above the keyboard – more on that later.
HP relies for the most part on a matt black aluminum look. In addition, the lid offers the Omen-typical logo and a contrasting X. Only the bottom and the display edges are made of plastic, but also make a valuable impression. There are no sharp or protruding edges here – body and lid lie well together when closed. Overall, the case gives little reason for criticism. Only the lid could be a little stiffer.
Thanks to the subtle exterior, the Omen X 2S is not immediately recognizable as a gaming notebook, so you can also use it as a powerful workstation laptop .

HP Omen X 2S 15 offers outstanding gaming power
HP installed X 2S on his omen 15 an Intel Core i9 9980 H from the Coffee Lake generation. This eight-core processor has a base clock frequency of 2.3 GHz, but reaches up to 4.8 GHz for a short time in turbo mode. In addition, an Nvidia RTX 2080 in Max-Q design with 8 GB GDDR6 graphics memory for sufficient power when playing. Thanks to this combination, you can also play current Triple-A titles in the 4K resolution of the main display. This also offers G-Sync support.
Surprisingly, the fans of the laptop barely turn up under load and always remain quiet. This is not a matter of course for gaming notebooks. HP uses the so-called “Omen Tempest cooling technology”. The developers not only rely on a fan module with a three-phase motor, but also do without the use of a conventional thermal paste in favor of a liquid metal alloy that offers higher thermal conductivity. In the test procedure, the notebook was not lured out of the reserve in any of our test scenarios and always remained pleasantly quiet.
Two displays – ideal for gamers and creative people
The specialty of the notebook lies in its dual display technology. Because here, in addition to a G-Sync-compatible main screen, a second screen was placed in the housing body.
After our tests, we rated the matt 15, 6-inch 4K display in the lid with the grade “good”. The screen of our test model works with a refresh rate of 60 Hz. The maximum brightness of the IPS panel is around 310 Candela per square meter. The screen is pleasantly bright, but unfortunately the checkerboard contrast falls with 142: 1 rather weak. And the color space coverage could also be 96 Percent in standard RGB but only 74 percent turn out better in the Adobe RGB color space. If you want to use the notebook not only for playing, but also as a tool for video and image editing and who is dependent on color fastness, you definitely have to get a matching monitor buy.
the smaller and shiny 5, 98 Inch-sized second screen can be found above the keyboard. Unlike the Asus ZenBook Pro Duo it does not extend across the entire width, but was integrated in the center of the case body. To protect it, the screen is under a glass plate, which unfortunately causes it to reflect. It resolves in Full HD and is multi-touch capable. This IPS panel not only offers gamers the option of placing inventory lists or mini-maps on this screen, but is also interesting for creative people, since they can place tools for their image or video editing here.
HP Omen X 2S 15: Many connection options leave nothing to be desired
When it comes to equipment, the Omen X 2S 15 – dg 0070 ng no wishes open. So HP relies on 32 GByte DDR4-RAM memory and two 1TByte SSDs, which are combined into a fast twoTByte SSD using RAID 0. Although this results in higher transfer rates for reading and writing in certain situations, this technology also has a disadvantage: If one of the two SSDs fails, all stored data is lost. You should therefore make regular backups of your system and your own files in order to protect yourself against data loss.
You will also find sufficient connection options on the notebook: These include one USB 3.1 Type-C port with Thunderbolt 3 support, three USB 3.1 ports of Type-A, one HDMI 2.0 port and one RJ – 45 – Interface for a lightning-fast gigabit -Connection. A combined jack connection for headset and microphone rounds off the excellent package. If you prefer to pair your headset with your laptop via Bluetooth, you can do that too thanks to Bluetooth 5.0. In addition, the device supports the WLAN standards 802. 11 b / g / n / ac. You only need a card reader for the Omen X 2S 15 dispense.
As usual with most gaming notebooks, Windows comes 10 Home for use. You can use the included “Omen Command Center” to control the lighting effects of the keyboard and the Omen logo embedded in the lid.
We were pleasantly surprised from the sound that came from the two integrated speakers thanks to HP Audio Boost and DTS: X Ultra.
Precise keyboard and good touchpad
Due to the arrangement of the second display, the keyboard of the Omen X 2S slips 15 all the way to the front of the case. HP does not use a mechanical version. But the built-in rubber dome version also convinced in our test. The individual keys have a short travel distance, so that you can react quickly at any time in the game. They also provide pleasant feedback, although not comparable to a mechanical keyboard. To replace the missing wrist rest, a replacement made of foam is included.
In addition, a new position had to be found for the touchpad. So it lands to the right of the keyboard and is designed more in portrait format. Unfortunately, this makes the device unusable for left-handers without an additional mouse. Even if the mouse replacement works precisely, you will not be asked to purchase a separate gaming mouse get around. Overall, the notebook leaves a good impression in the “Ergonomics” category.
Anything but a runner
Like so many gaming notebooks, the Omen X 2S suffers 15 at a rather weak battery performance. The permanently installed 72 – Watt hour battery leaves you around 2 hours and 15 minutes of videos, provided you leave the display at medium brightness – choose 4K -Play lasts a little over two hours on a single charge. The same applies to work on the computer: Here too, the device only lasted a little more than two hours with our simulated workload before it had to be plugged in again. A positive note is the rather low weight of around 2.4 kg for a gaming laptop.
HP Omen X 2S 15 – dg 0070 ng: High performance for a high price
The price for the Omen X 2S 15 falls with around 4. 000 Euro already quite steep. After all, with the device you get a notebook that is not only suitable for playing, but also for image and video editing in the standard RGB color space. You only have to cut back in the “Mobility” category. However, you should not always want to carry around a laptop with this purchase price.
For around 1. 000 Euro less you get with the Omen X 2S 15 – dg 0310 ng a cheaper option. The notebook with an Intel Core i7 9750H, 16 GByte RAM and an Nvidia RTX 2070 Max-Q-Design is a bit weaker, but the full HD main display offers a refresh rate of up to 144 Hz, which sometimes leads to an even smoother gaming experience.
