Light and durable: HP Elite Dragonfly in the test

Some users travel a lot in modern professional life and always have their work notebook with them. So that the fun of working is not lost, you need a light device with a long battery life. This is exactly where the HP Elite Dragonfly shows its strengths, because it leaves nothing to be desired in terms of battery life. In our simulated everyday work benchmark, it holds strong 08: 59 hours through, in the video runtime test even 14: 48. Few other models like the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon G7 achieve such strong values and the HP Specter Folio 13 .

Not only the very good runtimes are fun when traveling, also the well processed and narrow 13 – inch housing, which comes with its weight of just 1.1 kilograms very easily, contributes to this.

Another important feature for a reliable business companion is the connectivity of the laptop. For example, HP has installed a slot for 4G-compatible mobile phone cards and is already using the new WiFi 6. For quick notes in tablet mode, HP also includes an active stylus, which makes the equipment of a convertible notebook perfect. Conveniently, this also adheres magnetically to a special position on the top of the housing. Because there is the magnet that holds the notebook locked in tablet mode.

Anyone who travels a lot professionally should think about a built-in LTE module. Picture: HP

For more performance to edit one or the other video project, it is worth taking a look at the Dell XPS 15 7590 2019.

Reliable office workhorse

The heart of the HP Elite Dragonfly is a Core i5 – 8265 U- Processor of the Whiskey Lake generation, the 16 GByte RAM at your side. Users save their data on a 362 GByte large SSD, which also has a fast Intel Optane memory from 32 GByte size. This 32 GByte, however, cannot be freely assigned, but should only increase the write and read speed of the mass storage device for files that are used frequently. The performance is with a measured transfer rate of 412 MB / s very good, however this value is sometimes used by other laptops of our Premium notebook leaderboard topped. So we measure at Lenovo's ThinkPad X1 Yoga G4 excellent 504 MB / s and at Acers Swift 5 SF 515 – 51 T – 73 Q7 are also very good 418 MB / s. And both models do not need expensive Optane memory.

The performance of the Intel Core i5 CPU is good, but not outstanding. . 4 591 Points in PCMark 8: Creative Accelerated Test are useful. The benchmark evaluates the system's performance from web browsing and video editing to casual gaming. Office and multimedia work perfectly, but there are more suitable devices for complex work such as video editing.

Despite a narrow construction height of only 1.7 centimeters, HP does not do without an HDMI Socket and USB Type-A ports. In addition, two modern USB Type-C ports with high-performance Thunderbolt 3 protocol are available, via which the convertible is also supplied with power.

The built-in HDMI port is practical and still very important in everyday work. Photo: CHIP

Mid-range display only

The 13, 3 -Inch Full HD display (1. 920 x 1. 080 pixels) is OK and delivers with a maximum brightness of 362 Candela per square meter and a checkerboard contrast of 156 for 1 just useful values. The color space coverage is also okay: the standard RGB color space is covered by the HP Elite Dragonfly 99 percent, but only the larger AdobeRGB color space 76 percent. Thanks to the convertible function, the display can be completely folded over onto the keyboard part so that it is becomes a somewhat larger tablet on which you can make handwritten notes.

In the flat base there is a keyboard that does not have a long travel distance, but its keystroke falls so crisp that even long texts can be unerringly written on the Dragonfly. The Clickpads is also a nice size for such a compact case. It has a very pleasant surface and shows no abnormalities in the operation.

On the robust and elegantly processed housing, we only miss a separate volume control such as HP, for example, on the HP Specter x 360 13 – 4151 ng installed. Because in tablet mode the speakers can only be turned down with an annoying number of clicks after minimizing the running application. This is more convenient.

The Dragonfly is versatile. The display can be folded down to the tablet to write down notes using a pen. Photo: CHIP
