Test: Fujifilm X-T3 (DSLM, test)

Conclusion from 14. 02. 2019

The Fujifilm X-T3 delivers a first-class performance in the test. The flagship

with APS-C sensor shines especially when it comes to resolution with measured values that even some small-format DSLMs can only dream of. In the end, the Fujifilm X-T3 presents itself less as a sophisticated evolution, but much more as a genuine revolution of the mirrorless cameras with APS-C sensor.

Fujfifilm X-T3: masterpiece in the test

To describe the Fujifilm X-T3 in the test with just one word, is not exactly easy: to describe it as a “further development” of the previous models, if it hits it quite well at first, it will be the best previously tested APS-C-DSLM but not fair. Because the latest model of the XT series is not opening a new chapter for photographers, but rather another book. If you liked the predecessor, you will immediately love the Fujifilm X-T3.

The reason: The traditional Japanese manufacturer has really taken customer feedback to heart. Criticisms, such as the streaky video modes of the X-T2 , were not simply improved, but expanded without further ado to become the new top discipline of DSLM. The similarities that still exist between the X-T3 and its predecessor are quickly enumerated: chic retro housing and one or two features. Apart from that, Fujifilm has developed its new system camera model so radically compared to its older sister that the term “model maintenance” would definitely not be appropriate for the current state of affairs.

Fujfifilm X-T3: The heart of a champion

Let's start with the non-stabilized image sensor of the Fujifilm X-T3 in our Test: The newly developed chip solves with its now 26 Megapixels round 10 percent higher than the older APS-C sensors from the manufacturer. The developers have the number of autofocus phase detection points compared to the X-T2 quadrupled and distributed over the entire sensor area. Together with the fourth generation X processor and its four computing cores, the 425 Focus points for a very fleet Focusing and also extremely reliable tracking of fast-moving subjects.

The unmistakable X-Trans architecture of the image chip remains unchanged: Instead of a Bayer Color filters have sensors in the cameras of the Fujifilm-X series via a specially developed matrix. More green color dots compared to the Bayer structure come closer to human vision, which means that the motif reproduction appears very true to color. In addition, the resolution of the sensor is increased by changing the arrangement of the color pixels, because instead of lines with either green and red or green and blue pixels, each color value is represented in each line. Red and blue line pairs are thus more finely resolved. In addition, the fourth generation CMOS chip is manufactured using the BSI process.

Fujifilm has changed the order of the individual sensor layers to backlight the sensor (“back side illumination”). In conventional CMOS sensors, incident light first passes through the so-called metallization layer in which the fine conductor tracks are accommodated before it hits the sensitive silicon layer. This can result in a shadow cast, which means that less usable light information reaches the sensor surface. With the BSI sensor, on the other hand, the metallization and silicon layers are interchanged. The result: more light hits the photodiodes, so the image signal has to be amplified to a lesser extent, which reduces the noise in the recordings – at least in theory.

Fujfifilm X-T3: what the technology promises

All these tricks of the developers should ensure that the image results of Fujifilm X-T3 move clearly towards 35mm quality. Our measurements largely confirm this. With around 2. 250 of theoretically possible 2. 500 line pairs per image height at the resolution, the Fujifilm X-T3 secures 2nd place among all cameras that have ever been measured in our test laboratory. Only the Leica M with black and white sensor, the new DSLM has to give up here. But it gets even better: The DSLM reaches this record resolution up to and including ISO 400. And even with higher sensitivity values up to and including ISO 12. 800 the resolution is reduced to just on 80 percent of the theoretical maximum value. In short: The Fujifilm X-T3 is simply unconditionally sharp, sharp, sharp in any shooting situation. Hats off for this achievement!

As far as the representation of fine details is concerned, the Fujifilm X-T3 is on par with the predecessor who is already good in this discipline , Deviations, whether upwards or downwards, can only be measured in the lower single-digit percentage range, but are never really noticeable in the recordings. The same applies to the noise behavior. Surprising, because due to the BSI sensor architecture, we would have expected a bit more from the X-T3 in this regard. In order to avoid misunderstandings, it should be mentioned at this point that the X-T3 up to and including ISO 6. 400 do not give any reason for complaint. Only from ISO 12. 800, interference pixels are clearly recognizable and really affect the quality of the recordings .

Fujfifilm X-T3: image quality is just the beginning

If you think now, the Fujifilm X-T3 already has its powder with it missed the picture quality, it should be revealed that the DSLM also burns a real fireworks display when it comes to the equipment: the rotating and swiveling 3.0-inch display on the back still resolves with 1, 04 million pixels, but now reacts to finger pointing. The touch controls include focusing in photo and video mode. Even in the freely assignable quick menu, the most important recording settings can be changed quickly and conveniently with

the finger on the display. However, the function is not available in the much more extensive

, although somewhat confusing main menu. Here the photographer has to use the directional cross or the focus joystick as usual.

Also new: the electronic viewfinder has a much higher resolution, around 3 , 7 million pixels deliver a noticeably clearer, flicker-free preview image at all times. Even at 20 Recordings per second in series with electronic and if necessary silent shutter, the viewfinder provides an uninterrupted picture – really impressive what the X-T3 delivers here. 30 Images per second are theoretically possible, but only with restrictions. But more on that later.

The series length is around 80 JPEGs or 35 RAWs in a row lush and large enough for most shooting situations – whereby the forced break due to the full buffer memory is less important because the two SD Card slots have been emptied again in no time thanks to the UHS-II standard. Despite the identical battery capacity, the Fujifilm X-T3 even outshines its predecessor in terms of runtime: 30 percent more pictures, more precisely around 550 Images per load are handled by the mirrorless in the standardized test. Speaking of standard: The DSLM communicates wirelessly via Bluetooth or WLAN, wired, a USB Type-C connection is used, via which the camera can also be charged during operation. All in all 16 Film simulation modes and other creative filter effects invite you to experiment.

Fujfifilm X-T3: Attention, here comes a professional

As if this performance in the area of still images wasn't enough, Fujifilm delivers X-T3 also offers professional-level performance in video mode and even rivals the previous top dogs, Panasonic's Micro Four Thirds cameras: Recordings in “real” DCI 4K, i.e. with 4. 096 x 2. 160 pixels or in UHD resolution the DSLM masters with up to 60 pictures per Second, Full HD videos for smooth slow-motion land with up to 120 images per second on the Memory cards. Both the proven H are available for coding. 264 algorithm as well as the improved, more compressing H.265 – Codec to choose from. If you record with an external HDMI recorder, you can enjoy 4: 2: 2 pixel reading at 10 bit color depth.

Data rates of up to 500 Mbit per second, all-intra-frames for even more quality with less compression as well as the flat F-log and the “DR designed for more dynamic range % “- Picture profiles are preinstalled as standard and at no extra charge. Supplied by update until the end 2018 still “Hybrid Log Gamma”, a standardized color profile, as well as the possibility of film simulation and F-Log material at the same time issue. Finally, the claim as a video professional is underpinned by a 3.5 mm jack plug for the headphones, also a premiere in the housing of a camera of the X series , a micro input, doubled recording times at all resolutions compared to the predecessor and a “timecode” function including a dedicated connection for synchronizing multiple recording devices. Filmerherz, what more do you want!

Fujfifilm X-T3: The “Sport viewfinder mode” option visualizes the crop factor with a practical frame. Picture: CHIP

Fujfifilm X-T3: If it weren't for the crop …

However, both when taking pictures and when filming with higher frame rates Circumstance to bear that can be both a curse and a blessing; There is talk of a clear cropping and thus a cut-out reduction, the so-called crop: The already existing APS-C format factor of 1.5 is accompanied by more than 20 frames per second an additional trimming with the factor 1, 25.

When filming in UHD and 4K resolution with 50 or more pictures per second, the viewing angle narrows by a factor of 1.3. While this may still seem very useful in telephoto in many shooting situations, distant subjects finally move a little closer. Especially when taking pictures and filming in wide angle, the cropping is clearly noticeable at the end. In this case, only lenses with a shorter focal length can compensate. Especially filmmakers who want to shoot video logs with the X-T3 should be a wide-angle lens with a focal length of less than 18 millimeters warmly recommended.
