Test: AMD Ryzen Threadripper 3960X in the test

How to find the right CPU for your computer

Conclusion from 20. 02. 2020

The AMD Ryzen Threadripper 3960 X shows itself in the test as an enormously potent enthusiast CPU – although it is the smallest thread ripper CPU based on Zen 2 with “only” 24 cores. The performance is impressive: The 3960 X does not have any significant weaknesses and is the next largest model only in applications that scale strongly with an increasing number of cores. The high performance can also be paid for by AMD. Despite the price, no cooler is included – AMD recommends water cooling.

Very strong performance
Inexpensive for the performance
Very high thermal power loss
No cooler included

With the 3000 generation, code name “Castle Peak”, the thread rippers have also arrived in the Zen-2 microarchitecture. This chip contains 13 physical, in the 7 nm process manufactured cores, which clock from 3.8 to 4.5 GHz. Each core is 2x 32 KByte L1- and 512 KByte L2 cache to the side, the shared L3 cache is comparatively gigantic 128 MByte.

In contrast to Threadripper 1 and 2, AMD changes the socket: Instead of TR4 mainboards, sTRX4 boards now come with the current TRX 40 – Chipset for use – an upgrade is not possible. TRX 40 supports eight RAM cards in a quad-channel network for up to 256 GByte RAM (officially maximum DDR4 – 3200).

The platform has a total of 88 PCIe 4.0 lanes – some of them are reserved. Mainboard manufacturers can natively install the USB 3.2 port (Gen 2) twelve times and USB 2.0 four times. There are also two x4 NVMe connections for fast SSDs and 20 SATA connectors ready. With the StoreMI function, SSDs and hard drives can also be coupled in order to use the flash memory as a cache and thus drastically accelerate the magnetic memory reserves.

Benchmarks: One for (almost) everything

The 3960 X does great in the test. With video coding (x 265), ray tracing and encryption and decryption let the 24 Cores play their muscles. In the 3D modeling program Blender, the CPU is fast and in AMD's favorite test, Cinebench R 20 (Multicore), she would set dizzying records – if the big sister 3970 X would not be even faster.

Compared to Intel's new 18 – Kerner, the Intel Core i9 – 10980 XE, the CPU also does an excellent job – in no test can the 10980 XE the AMD processor, the distance is great. But the price-performance ratio of the Intel CPU is slightly better, after all, the model costs only 1.130 Euro. We compare all results directly in in our leaderboard .

Alternative: AMD Ryzen 9 3950 X

With all the top values, however, the Ryzen 9 3950 X in the eye. In many applications, despite the price difference, the processors are not far apart. Especially for everyday tests and gaming tasks, the models can hardly be distinguished from each other – a thread ripper will therefore not bring you FPS advantages in current games, all private and semi-professional users should use a 3950 X be well served. This also “only” costs around 770 Euro. A thread ripper, on the other hand, is aimed at those who want to cut an elaborate video, while three more render in parallel.
