Simple, fast and sure – these are the key strengths of Chromebooks. We explain here together with Google what role the Chrome OS operating system plays, why there are different Chromebooks and how these extraordinary laptops work.
What is a Chromebook?
Chromebooks are normal laptops. Whereby: This is rather the first impression. They are completely new. The basis for this is the Chrome OS operating system. Because even if Chromebooks are offered by different manufacturers in different versions and price ranges: they all have the operating system in common. And that makes them exceptionally fast, easy and safe. In short, you could say: Chromebooks are laptops from different manufacturers that run with Chrome OS.
Why is a Chromebook so easy to use?
If you use an Android smartphone – and they are around 75 Percent – who will recognize the user interface of a Chromebook directly and find his way around intuitively. All favorite apps, games etc. are available in the Google Play Store with its over 2.4 million apps. Just as we listen to music on the smartphone via app, stream series, do banking, check our emails or book accommodation, we can also do this on a laptop with a Chromebook. We need a Google account to set it up – then you can start right away. And no matter on which of our devices we are logged in: Our data and settings are automatically synchronized.
What makes a Chromebook so fast?
Similar to a smartphone, the Chrome OS operating system makes it possible to do without unnecessary processes and hardware. This ensures extreme speed: While other devices feel like it takes an eternity to boot up, a Chromebook takes about as long as a 100 – Meter sprinter for the world record – so open up and get started. The response times for apps are also extremely short. Something like we are used to from an Android phone.
Why is a Chromebook particularly secure?
Since the “Chromebook” concept was developed by Google from scratch, the security concept can also penetrate all areas. For example, protection against malware and viruses from the Internet is already integrated and does not have to be installed by a third party. The updates run automatically and in the background. This means that virus protection is always up to date. Each time the system is started up, it is checked whether the system to be loaded is really secure. If it is not, a previous version is loaded (verified boot). The sandboxing system also handles individual internal processes separately. If one is infected by malware, it cannot be transferred to the others.
How does the Chromebook show these strengths in everyday life?
When using the Chromebook, cloud-based work is in the foreground. This means that the internal hard drive does not have to be very large. There is also no fan or optical drive. In this way, Chromebooks can be built very light and narrow. Since it is limited to processes and hardware that are really efficient and necessary, the energy consumption is very low. So the battery lasts up to 12 hours.
These two properties make Chromebooks the perfect companion in different situations: You can take notes at university or have a look , give a presentation in the office or continue working on a report and check emails or chat with friends during lunch in the café. But stay mobile at home too: check the latest headlines at the breakfast table, write the important script in the study, read the corrections on the sofa and relax in bed in the evening with your favorite series in the Netflix app.
The Chromebook is as flexible as we users even they are – and also expect it from our smart devices.
