Send flowers: Twelve online flower delivery services tested

Fleurop or Aldi – who delivers the best flowers?

| by

Keep flowers fresh longer

To put it straight away: Neither Fleurop nor Aldi play an important role when it comes to the question of which flower delivery service should be used to send your flowers. CHIP has twelve of these service providers for Valentine's Day 2019 tested and the services in terms of quality, offer and delivery conditions checked. And that was urgently needed – because the best flower delivery providers are not the ones with the big, well-known names.

For our test we chose one of the hottest phases in the florist business: shortly before Valentine's Day we ordered a colorful one Bouquet from twelve important suppliers on the German market. Because of the better comparability we have offers around the 30 Euro chosen. We then watched the twelve bouquets for seven days to see if the vendors' promises regarding freshness and durability of the delivery could be kept. Because the main criterion in our test is the quality of the flowers. In addition, the range of products, the scope of delivery, services and the ordering process play a role in the assessment.

Variety of offers in flower delivery: The selection is often not that big

At the beginning of each flower shipment is the selection of the present. The offers here are quite different. The representations on the websites always look colorful and diverse, but in detail we often find gaps. For example, bouquets with flowers of one variety are mostly on offer, especially pure rose bouquets. With potted plants, funeral arrangements and wreaths or even gift baskets, it often looks pretty poor. We find gaps almost everywhere. Just FloraPrima , euro florist and Fleurop cover the entire floristic range that we have checked. This also includes vases or additional options, such as small gifts such as soft toys or chocolate. The performance of a provider also includes what wishes he can fulfill beyond the standards, even if this point only to 10 percent is included in the overall rating.

The biggest gaps can be found at Bloom & Wild . Here you can order numerous arrangements with imaginative names, but they all fall into the mixed bouquet category. Also BlumeIdeal , BloomyDays and Aldi flowers we devalue. Wreaths and gift baskets are missing here, and everyone has at least one more gap.

Send flowers: you get it for your money

When evaluating the scope of delivery with a share of 20 percent in the overall rating, we experienced quite a number of Surprises. We were prepared that a water reservoir is missing from time to time or maybe the expected care instructions. In fact, however, we see significant differences in the ordered bouquets themselves. For example, the bouquets delivered do not necessarily correspond to what is shown on the website. This is not surprising, rather that the recipient may be disappointed with the scope. Although all test bouquets are comparable in price, the deliveries are very different. For example, we count 21 flowers in the BloomyDays bouquet, the Fleurop – delivery only included five specimens (each without decorative plants). These are the two extreme values, the deliveries from the other suppliers are widely distributed. Aldi and Aquarelle each belong to 16 Flowers to the generous florists, overall winner flower Ideal shows up in this category with 12 stems rather reserved.

It is also worth mentioning that no candidate stands out as a special environmental offender. Almost all shipments arrived in simple cardboard boxes, and there is also little packaging waste, which can then be disposed of without any problems. Fleurop surprised particularly positively: The bouquet reached us largely without packaging by messenger from the nearest Fleurop contract florist.

Send flowers: Service is not a priority for every provider

Determine order process and service 10 percent of the total grade in our test. These issues seem to be particularly difficult for providers. In no other category do we register so few exemplary achievements. Of the twelve test candidates, only two providers achieved a very good rating: FloraPrima and Euroflorist. The scope of functions of the online ordering tool plays a role in the evaluation, which shipping options are available (such as anonymous delivery or delivery on the day of the order), how many payment options are available and which help options are available. And finally, punctuality comes into focus.

At the last point, unfortunately, the easiest way is for the providers: they simply don't promise much. With a standard order, there is an expected delivery date, but all providers expressly point out that it can also be later. In the test we have all orders on 12. February, i.e. two days before Valentine's Day, was given up – and in at least nine cases the bouquet was actually on 14. February in CHIP test center . We waited a day longer for Euroflorist, FloraQueen and Aquarelle. For the sake of justice, it must be said that such delivery dates depend heavily on the parcel service chosen. DHL or DPD were almost always used in the test.

One way out is the guarantee delivery option, which can be chosen anywhere except for BloomyDays and Aldi – but the providers can do that sometimes pay quite well. The surcharge is two 2 euros at FloraQueen and around 5 euros at Lidl , Flower2000 and Fleurop. As mentioned, Aldi and Bloomy Days do not offer the option, at Bloom & Wild the surcharge differs depending on the day and order.

Quality of the flowers: The flowers are so fresh – and some remain very long

The most important aspect in the test for us is the question of the quality of the delivery. In other words: in what condition do the flowers arrive and how long does the bouquet make a good impression? 60 Percentage of the total result seems appropriate to us.

When delivered, our candidates offer a predominantly friendly picture. All bouquets look fresh and visually appealing. Most of the time we only have small things to note: The roses in the mixed bouquet were already wide or very wide open in five cases, which does not inspire a lot of confidence in the durability, on the other hand, the Lidl – Bouquet of most flowers still in the bud stage and only bloomed in full splendor a day or two later, but then all the more impressively. At this stage we thought the bouquet was one of the most beautiful in the test.

Occasionally, small brown spots were visible or a single bud fell off. Overall, however, we judge almost all bouquets with a “good” – with one exception: Of all the probably best known service Fleurop not only delivered the smallest bouquet, some flowers also showed clear black spots and wide open flowers. Here we can only assign a “sufficient”. At the other end of the performance scale is the test winner BlumeIdeal , whose bouquet arrived especially fresh and in almost perfect appearance. In both cases, this part of the assessment is the reason for the two extreme overall grades (1st place for BlumeIdeal, Rote Lantern for Fleurop).

After the initial assessment we placed all the bouquets on a suitable one Place in the test laboratory and observed the development for seven days. We used the care instructions and fresh preservatives provided, dried or otherwise spoiled plant parts were removed. In the end, of course, all the candidates gave up feathers, but with clear differences in the visual impression. Bloom & Wild and Valentins still look good. The bouquets of watercolors and Fleurop, on the other hand, offered a picture of misery.

When it came to the delivery from Bloom & Wild, the good packaging and the freshness-keeping agents supplied paid off. Even after seven days, the bouquet looks almost perfect. Picture: CHIP

Flower delivery test results: The overall rating

The outcome is decided in the proverbial photo finish: BlumeIdeal is ahead – but a lead can hardly be closer. Valentins is literally a hair's breadth behind, the difference is only visible in the further decimal range. FloraPrima also follows with an imperceptible distance. Differences only become relevant in practice when assessing the price-performance ratio.

The best quality rating for the delivered flowers and an exemplary delivery scope ensure the test victory for the provider BlumeIdeal. Picture: CHIP

Our price tip: flowers at the discounter

Because the consumer often decides – especially when it comes to comparable services – we also determine the price-performance ratio. When ordering, we restrict ourselves to a certain price range, but we cannot find identical prices anywhere. The offers range from 23, 99 Euro (Valentines) to 34 90 Euro (BloomyDays). The shipping costs differ even more: Fleurop and FloraQueen still charge around 7 euros shipping costs, with BloomyDays and Aldi there are none – the decisive factor that makes Aldi flowers a price tip among online florists.

A bargain press is not enough for the price-performance victory; we also rate the quality of the Aldi flowers as quite appealing. Picture: CHIP
