In addition to the large network operators, a number of third-party providers also offer cell phone contracts – and in some cases significantly cheaper GettyImages

You should pay attention to this when concluding a mobile phone contract

The most important criterion when deciding on a cell phone contract is the network: While the Telekom and Vodafone networks last Network test by CHIP were almost on an equal footing, Telefónica ended up in third place with some distance – this has to be taken into account, especially if you do not live in a big city. In the country it can be tight with all providers, but the chances of good reception are the worst in the Telefónica network.

In addition to contracts with a classic term of two years There are now a large number of offers with a short term: You can usually cancel these tariffs every month. With such offers, you remain significantly more flexible – at the same time, tariffs with a short term are not automatically more expensive, sometimes they only differ in the one-time connection price from identical tariffs with 24 months term.

In contrast to tariffs that are available directly from network operators, cheaper offers from third-party providers mainly focus on the maximum available speed: The download speed is often 21, 6, 25 or 50 Mbit / s limited, while optimally several hundred Mbit / s would also be possible in the networks. In many cases this is not a big problem: Even with 21, 6 Mbit / s use WhatsApp & Co. and problems, video streaming in high resolution is also possible. Whoever wants the highest performance, however, usually has to resort to the more expensive tariffs of the network operators.

Watch out for pitfalls

Before you conclude a mobile phone contract, you should pay attention to a number of things that could prove to be pitfalls.

  • Height Costs from 25. Month: In tariffs with a term of two years, the basic fee is from 25. Month sometimes significantly more expensive. You do not have to avoid these offers in principle, but you should make sure to give notice of termination in good time, at the latest three months before the automatic contract extension, better even earlier.

  • Automatic data: In some tariffs, new data volume is automatically booked up to three times after consumption of the inclusive volume – usually at outrageous prices. You can deactivate the automatic data processing at all providers and should also make use of this option. This is usually possible in the customer portal of the provider or on the hotline.
  • Refund of the connection price after SMS: In some cases providers reimburse the one-time accrued Connection fees – but only if you send a certain SMS within a defined period after activating the contract. If you book a corresponding offer, make sure to actually send the required SMS within the specified period.
  • High cost when taking the phone number with you: Thanks to the corresponding legal regulations, you can take your number with you from the old to the new provider. The new provider often even rewards this with a small premium – however, please note that your old provider will also charge you for taking the number with you. In view of these costs, frequent tariff changes are not worthwhile if the savings are only a few euros per month.
