Grafikkarte kaufen: So finden Sie die passende GPU

Photographers, gamers or video producers need the right graphics card for smooth work. Because many applications distribute the workload not only to the CPU, but also to the GPU. Accordingly, a powerful graphics processor ensures fast and smooth work. In this test we present the most suitable models from AMD and Nvidia for the resolutions Full-HD, WQHD and UHD.

Not only gamers need a strong graphics card in their PC – but also professional users like photographers and video cutters. It all comes down to the right graphics processor, the GPU. AMD and Nvidia manufacture these graphics processors. The complete graphics cards then come from various board partners who decide on the power supply, fans and equipment.

We arrange this buying advice according to desktop resolutions – Full HD, WQHD and all the way to UHD – and recommend matching graphics card series. From the respective series from the manufacturers AMD and Nvidia, we then recommend a recommended graphics card from our tests. And finally, we give you recommendations in the event that you are looking for a GPU that should support technically less demanding gaming, for example for games like Fortnite or Overwatch.

Our AMD recommendation for full HD resolution

AMD uses his Radeon 5500 XT on the navigation system – 14 – GPU. Picture: AMD

AMD entry-level cards for Full HD resolution (1. 920 times 1.0 80 pixels) use the so-called Navi – 14 -GPU. It should appeal to users who pay attention to their money and want to get as much performance as possible at a low price. Under the Radeon 5500 XT is still the Radeon 5500, however we consider the price difference to be too small if the power loss is too great. Accordingly, we recommend the handle to the XT variant.

The temperature development is limited for cards with this GPU, so that the cooling is usually quiet. There is also a low power consumption both at idle and under full load. A 5500 XT can therefore be quite short and fits into smaller housings.

The graphics cards that use this chip are equipped with either 4 GB or 8 GB. If you have a choice when buying, then you should definitely choose the larger memory, especially since the version with the larger memory is only slightly more expensive. The 4 GB variant shows strong stutters in some games even at Full HD resolution. With the larger version you can play many current games in full HD resolution at a high level of detail.

If you want a little more performance, you should get an AMD Radeon RX 5600 Look at XT, for example the Sapphire AMD Pulse Radeon RX 5600 XT . The builds on the larger Navi – 10 – GPU and delivers more graphics Power – but you have to dig deeper into your pocket.

Buy recommendations AMD Radeon RX 5500 XT

Our Nvidia recommendation for full HD resolution

Also with the 16 '' model series, Nvidia trusts the well-known Turing architecture with the TU 116 – GPU. Nvidia does not sell its own model, so here is a picture of the Zotac Gaming GeForce GTX 1660 Twin Fan. Picture: Zotac

For cheap gaming in Full HD resolution, we recommend a graphics card from Nvidia that is based on the TU 116 – GPU sets, among other things, in the entire GTX – 1660 – series is used. With this GPU, Nvidia has launched an interesting entry-level variant that wants to appeal to price-conscious users.

As the name GTX suggests in comparison to the more expensive RTX series, Nvidia does without features like ray tracing or DLSS for these graphics cards. The GPU is characterized by high efficiency in typical rendering. The power consumption is inconspicuous both under full load and when idling. The same applies to the temperature development.

In addition to the GTX 1660 there is also the GTX 1660 Ti. With the GTX 1660 GDDR5-RAM is used while the GTX 1660 Ti sets on the faster GDDR6-RAM . The number of shaders, i.e. the computing units, is also higher for the Ti models. Overall, the 1660 Ti a noticeable performance plus, which Nvidia can also pay well. With the usual 1660 you get more for your money overall, but you have to turn the details down a bit more with more recent games.

Our AMD recommendation for WQHD resolution

For its mid-range graphics card Radeon RX 5700 and RX 5700 XT uses AMD's navigation system – 10 – GPU. Picture: AMD

In the segment of mid-range graphics cards and for playing in WQHD resolution (2. 560 times 1. 440 Pixel) AMD offers the Radeon series 5700 and 5700 XT on. In these maps the navigation system – 10 – GPU installed. If you want to be on the safe side and play all games at the highest level of detail, you should definitely go to the Radeon 5700 XT grab. It is currently the most powerful graphics card that AMD has placed on the market.

The Navi – 10 – Graphics chipset is based on a completely new architecture called RDNA, which offers a significant performance gain per watt than AMD's previous generations. However, if the card is fully used, the power consumption of our test system can be around depending on the model 370 Reach watts. For the stronger Nvidia models RTX 2080 and 2080 Ti we sometimes measure similar values.

Despite the new architecture, you have to do without features such as ray tracing and DLSS technology with this GPU. If you can do that, you get a powerful graphics card at a fair price, which also makes UHD gaming possible. Then you should be ready to reduce the level of detail depending on the game.

Buy recommendations AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT

Our Nvidia recommendation for WQHD resolution

Nvidia installed at the 2060 Super a TU 106 – GPU. The 2060 Super is a lot more powerful than the standard model. Picture: Nvidia

Nvidia sets at RTX 2060 Super on a TU 106 -GPU. This is how the 2060 Super faster than its predecessor and only a little bit slower than the RTX 2070. You can easily play in WQHD resolution – even more demanding video projects can be easily realized with the graphics chipset. This is also because the RTX 2060 Super now also with 8 GB GDDR6-VRAM and thus the previous limitation of the RTX 2060 to 6 GB.

If you place a lot of emphasis on graphics, you should be happy that the GPU also supports ray tracing and DLSS. Ray tracing gives developers the opportunity to beautifully display light and shadow effects, while DLSS (Deep-Learning Super Sampling) is a method for smoothing edges using artificial intelligence to conserve resources.

Our system power consumption lies with the RTX 2060 Super idle at around 60 Watt and under full load the St rome consumption on round 290 watts. The volume of most models is limited.

If you are lucky, you may find a better alternative to RTX 2060 Super: the RTX 2070 without the “Super” addition. This is namely in the sale. Often this means that prices are exaggerated, but in one or the other shop you may find the older generation with more shaders at the price of or even below 2060 Great.

If you prefer to install the new generation in your desktop PC and want a little more performance, you can also go to the RTX 2070 Great grip . This is more expensive, but also more powerful, so you can easily play games in WQHD resolution with a high level of detail.

Buy recommendations Nvidia RTX 2060 Great

Our UHD recommendation: Nvidia is looking for a challenger

AMD does not yet offer a current GPU in the area of UHD resolution. Here Nvidia lonely circles. Picture: Nvidia

AMD still has some catching up to do in the luxury segment and also in high-end GPUs. At the moment you have to wait for the expected graphics cards with the so-called Big Navi GPU. These should also have a ray tracing option. But it doesn't yet exist and until then Nvidia is in the gaming segment with a UHD resolution of 3. 840 times 2. 160 Pixels rather unrivaled.

Our recommendation, also with regard to performance for the money: The RTX 2080 Super uses a fully equipped TU 104 – Graphics chipset and at least 8 GB of fast GDDR6 RAM. It brings all kinds of content such as photos, games or videos to the screen in 4K resolution without any problems. Here it is worth taking a closer look at the custom boards, as some are already offered overclocked and thus deliver a small increase in performance. The power consumption attracts attention both at idle and under full load, so that our system is often around the 400 Watts required for heavy use. Of course, these cards also support ray tracing and DLSS.

However, you can also save a few euros here if you do not want to buy the latest generation. Because also the RTX – 2080 – As a previous version, cards are sometimes sold cheaply in various online shops. If you want even more power, you have to dig deep into your pocket and well over 1. 00 0 Euro either in an RTX 2080 Invest Ti or a Titan RTX.

Buy recommendations Nvidia RTX 2080-Series

Processor GPU or 100 – Euro graphics card?

If you do not attach great importance to performance and can do without elaborate graphics, you can, for example, with the Zotac GeForce GT 1030 Zone Edition buy an absolute entry-level card, which is under 100 Euro costs. However, the requirements with regard to performance and equipment should then be correspondingly low. Power consumption and background noise can be convincing, but otherwise you shouldn't expect miracles. This card only serves as an upgrade of a pure office PC without a dedicated graphics solution.

Instead of such a card, a CPU with a strong, built-in graphics unit could also be worthwhile. For example, you can use the AMD Ryzen 5 3400G, which integrates a Vega – 11 – unit owns, quite smoothly play League of Legends or Overwatch.

Graphics types like the Zotac GeForce GT 1030 Zone Edition offer little performance and are only interesting for casual gamers. Picture: Zotac

This is how CHIP tests graphics cards

There are lots of current graphics cards on the market, because the board partners offer many different cooling solutions for different sizes of wallet for each GPU. We cannot test every single one, so we try to subject every currently available GPU to our test procedure, at least as a standard version and once as an overclocked version. Of course, our test center endeavors to take into account as many manufacturers as possible.

In such a case, however, it must be taken into account that we would like the test equipment to be fully tested by the manufacturer as close to the launch as possible . It is therefore possible that models of certain brands appear more frequently in our best list show up as others. You will also only find graphics cards here, which you can also buy. Of course, we also test pre-series or reference models from Nvidia and AMD. However, you will not be included in the leaderboard, but will receive a detailed practical test.

Our overall grade consists of four components, each of which is included in the result as a percentage:

  • The service with 80 percent
  • The loudness with 10 percent
  • The equipment and power consumption with 5 percent each

In our test center, we take a very close look at the graphics cards. Image: chip

This is how the performance grade is composed

Performance is the all-important criterion for a graphics card. If you want to buy a graphics card, your focus will be on performance. The performance evaluation consists of various benchmarks, whereby we test the most popular Full HD resolution as well as the future-oriented UHD. The benchmarks include, for example, Futuremark's 3DMark Suite and Valley, but also practical tests such as the benchmark modes of large games. For example, we test with GTA V, Total War: Warhammer II and Far Cry V. Overall, we note the results of 19 Performance tests in our best list . We also create subnotes for the Full HD and UHD performance from the game tests, whereby the Full HD results are 60 percent and the UHD results to 40 Percent flow into the final grade.

We also test various new benchmarks at all times in order to be able to integrate the results into our rating in the future. Therefore, it may be that in individual tests we also list benchmark results that are not in our best list.

Whisper-quiet or rather a vacuum cleaner: loudness

The cooling system used is responsible for the volume of a graphics card – and if the GPU is not a heat spinner, an efficient fan is the responsibility of the board partners. There are many fan types, which is why high-speed rotating, compact fans of small graphics cards can cause a lot of noise on the one hand, and passively cooled models on the other hand that are whisper-quiet. But even powerful high-end graphics cards work almost inaudibly if the manufacturer installs water cooling or very high-quality axial air cooling, for example. You should distance yourself from so-called blower models: These models are intended for computers with poor case cooling, because blower graphics cards blow the air out of the case themselves – and are often silly. If that doesn't bother you, then blower graphics cards are usually the cheapest option.

The final result of the loudness evaluation is the result of three individual measurements:

  • 2D operation (desktop)
  • average game operation

  • maximum load

The tip of the scales: equipment and power consumption

5 percent of the equipment is included in the overall rating. These include connecting cables or adapters as well as free software and games. The connection options and their number also count.

Like the equipment, 5 percent of the power consumption is included in the final grade. Here we determine how much electricity a test device consumes in a wide variety of scenarios. The evaluation consists of two measurements:

  • once idle

  • once under full load of the entire system

How much memory should a graphics card have?

in the category “Full HD resolution” there are some models that are delivered with either 4 GB or 8 GB. The tests showed that, especially in the game benchmarks, the variants with the larger memory also deliver the better performance. For this reason, you should always use the variant with more graphics memory if possible.

On which Storage type should I set?

Just for gamers or video producers, the faster the better. In this case, you should therefore make sure that your graphics card has the latest GDDR6 RAM. GDDR5 is currently still used in entry-level graphics cards, HBM2 currently uses no manufacturer in its new desktop models.

How do I find the right graphics card for me?

In order to find the right graphics card for you, you should proceed in several steps. First of all, you should consider the purpose for which you want to use the graphics card. For example, if you are a gamer or video producer, you need more power than if you only want to stream videos. In the next step, find out about the devices on the market that match your requirements. In the last step, you should seek advice and advice from like-minded people or friends who you know are tech-savvy before you can access them.
