Benefits
Very good image quality during the day
Excellent event storage
Good elaboration of the event button
Disadvantage
Large car plug without extra USB
Viewing angle could be larger

With the Transcend DrivePro 230 Q Data Privacy (for testing) has the manufacturer released a version especially for the German market – with success. The Dashcam gets the top rating from us in the security category. The camera records continuously, but recordings without an incident are deleted immediately. You can also adjust the sensitivity of the acceleration sensor in three stages according to your own requirements. If you still want to save a recording manually before deleting it, the corresponding button can be found quickly. Accident videos are write-protected and saved in a separate folder; if the SD card is defective, there is an alarm.

A 32 GByte microSD card is included in the accessories and inserting and removing the memory card works without fumbling. The camera – which comes with a suction cup holder – is easy to align using LiveView and a ball joint. Unfortunately, the power adapter is quite large and does not offer a USB port. The resolution of the camera is 1. 920 times 1. 080 pixels and 30 frames per second standard, but the recordings succeed both during the day and at night. The cam can also cope with changing lights in the tunnel. Only the viewing angle is a bit small. Particularly pleasing: The top quality is there for round 110 Euro and therefore quite cheap in comparison.

The Garmin Dash Cam 56 (for test) is a sophisticated top product. The Dashcam has a very compact housing with a stable attachment. However, the suction cup holder is subject to a surcharge, because “only” a good magnetic holder is included in the scope of delivery, which is glued to the glass. The Dashcam comes with all sorts of additional features. In addition to the exit and lane departure warning system, there is also a departure warning. Some functions can be controlled by voice command, and several Garmin dash cams can be synchronized. The vehicle connector is also compact.

Sensor sensitivity and storage duration cannot be set by the user. However, you have the choice of whether videos should be deleted immediately or saved without special events to protect personal rights. An SD memory card is not included. When an incident is detected, three one-minute recordings are merged into one file and saved securely in a separate folder with read-only protection. Benefits
Extreme wide angle with 157 Degree
Very good image quality during the day
Secure event storage
Disadvantage
No memory card included
Sensor sensitivity not adjustable

With the Garmin Dash Cam 66 W (for test) the company offers a car camera that has a field of view of 157 degree. The camera hardly misses a detail. Vehicles in the neighboring lane in particular are already captured on video, while other dash cams are far from seeing anything. With a maximum resolution of 2. 560 times 1. 440 pixels and 30 Frames per second there is also a very good picture. A larger field of vision inevitably means the loss of details, so the image quality is slightly worse than with the Garmin Dash Cam 56 – but still great.

Intelligent additional functions, such as voice control, good app Connection and the automatic synchronization of several Garmin dash cams are well implemented. You have to buy an SD memory card separately. And the sensor sensitivity cannot be set by the user. When an incident is detected, three one-minute recordings are merged into one file and saved securely in a separate folder with read-only protection. Videos without incidents can either be deleted immediately or saved. The large field of vision drives the price higher, round 240 Euro .

Disadvantage
Clear red cast in night shots
Camera sluggish in changing lighting conditions
Sensor sensitivity not adjustable

The Garmin Dash Cam 55 (for test) is the predecessor of the Dash Cam 56, which can come up with improvements. However, the quality difference is not great, also the model of 2018 we rate it as “very good”. In addition, the Price of around 140 Euro more than fair. Are the pictures with a maximum resolution of 2. 560 times 1. 440 Pixels and 30 Images per second a day are still very detailed, the video image has a red cast at night. And when the lighting conditions change, the camera reacts sluggishly. Overall, the image quality is still great, HDR is also possible.

Numerous features, including the built-in GPS module, not only serve the purpose of video recording for emergencies, they also provide support in the traffic. The dash cam warns you if you leave the lane or drive too close. The battery ensures the functions even if the power fails. There are voice commands for important functions. When an incident is detected, three one-minute recordings are merged into one file and saved securely in a separate folder with read-only protection. Dashcams: That's how much you get for your money

The dashcams we tested include models of around 60 to 300 Euro. Cheap models for under 100 Euros serve their purpose: The picture quality is in most Cases are satisfactory, but there are sometimes restrictions with regard to secure and data protection-compliant storage and equipment. If you value better video resolution and practical additional functions, you must 150 Spend Euros and more. Models for over 250 Euros usually have special features such as a particularly wide shooting angle. You can find an overview of all the car cameras we have tested in our leaderboard . There you can choose between different price ranges.

How do we test dash cams?

The CHIP testers take a close look at the dashcam model in practical use. In addition to the purely technical specifications such as video resolution or storage technology, the mounting of the car camera in the vehicle and its operability also play a role. The image quality makes 40 percent of the overall grade, after all, the video must be able to serve as evidence in an emergency. Every dash cam has to prove itself on the road both during the day and at night and under a wide variety of conditions. The secure and data protection-compliant storage of the recordings is also very important and flows with 40 percent in the rating. The quality of the equipment and ergonomics make up the rest of the overall grade. Not all functions are mandatory necessary.

Are dash cams allowed in Germany?

After a decision by the Federal Court of Justice in the year 2018 (Case number VI ZR 233 / 17) Dashcam recordings are permitted in court. Whether the videos are actually used as evidence, especially if their creation violated data protection law, is at the discretion of the judges. The permanent filming of the car camera is problematic because it can be used to take personal pictures of strangers. If the recordings reach the public, this is a punishable violation of the informational self-confidence.

The dash cams available in Germany avoid this problem by deleting their video recordings regularly and only then data save if the car camera has automatically recognized an accident or damage event. It is therefore a question of “short, event-related recordings of road traffic accidents to clarify the question of guilt”, the admissibility of which the ADAC also demands. Basically, recordings for private purposes are allowed, but if you publish videos without making people and car license plates unrecognizable, you will have to pay a heavy fine in an emergency.

The neighboring countries regulate the legality different from dashcams. In Austria you need a permit to use it and should therefore be careful. Use is also not recommended in Belgium, Luxembourg and Switzerland. France, the Netherlands, Denmark, Poland and the Czech Republic handle car cameras relatively easily. Dashcam videos from Russia and the United States, which circulate on the Internet, are notorious for their negligence. This should not be an “inspiration”, under no circumstances should you publish recordings.

Dashcams - Das müssen Sie wissen

Dashcam purchase advice: how good is the video recording?

The heart of every dash cam is the camera. It also plays the angle of view , the area captured by the lens plays a significant role: the larger the Angle of view, the more road traffic the Dashcam records. The test found values between 90 and 120 Degree. But be careful: the distortions increase with a wider angle. This leads to deformed lines, especially in the edge area. You may know this from the pictures of action cams with a very wide angle of view. Many manufacturers also tend to specify the angle in the diagonal. This leads to larger numerical values, at least in the description of the dash cam. Both in the test and in practice, however, the angle between the left and right edge of the picture is higher and should at least 90 degrees. The camera also captures a sufficiently large section of what is happening in front of the bonnet. In the test, we therefore always measured the image angle in the middle of the image – with sometimes drastic differences from the manufacturer's information.

Relevant for the image quality is also the video resolution : Almost every dashcam records in full HD resolution, i.e. with 1. 920 times 1. 080 pixels. In most cases, this is sufficient to recognize license plates or other relevant information. Top models even save material in QHD or Ultra HD resolution – this leads to significantly sharper images. In addition, video still images offer the possibility to enlarge details more. HDR-capable cameras also have more dynamic range for even higher-contrast images. This is a very practical function, especially in the case of rapid light changes, for example before or after a tunnel.

When buying a dash cam, also pay attention to the Frame rate with which is recorded. For example, if the camera takes 60 Frames per second (fps), still usable still images with legible license plates can be created even with very fast movements, such as oncoming cars. For our test, we extensively tested each dashcam in road traffic both during the day and at night and compared it under a variety of conditions.

Dashcam purchase advice: how secure is the data?

Both the protection of data protection and data security are important for Dashcams. As a rule, all car cameras have an integrated acceleration sensor. The driver uses sudden acceleration or braking maneuvers to recognize when an accident has occurred and records the event. Only this data is stored, all irrelevant recordings must be deleted regularly in order not to violate any personal rights.

The decisive factor is how reliably the dash cam really records in the event of an accident , recognizes faulty microSD cards and, if necessary, issues a message via signal tone or on the display. We rate it positively if the video material is saved separately, in a new folder and read-only. Accidental deletion is effectively prevented.

For safety reasons, the dashcam should record accident recordings and save them in a separate folder. Garmin

Dashcam purchase advice: Not all functions are necessary

The tight fit of the car camera on the windshield is important. The supplied bracket should absorb vibrations and be stable. Installation with a suction cup leaves no traces and is flexible. In most cases, an adhesive pad is much firmer and therefore more reliable on the pane. An integrated monitor also enormously facilitates the attachment, the alignment of the camera can be easily controlled.

In addition to the automatic recording of events, you have the many Dashcam models Possibility to start the recording manually using a button. Recordings usually end up on a microSD card, but this is not always included. Depending on the manufacturer, there are other more or less useful functions: An internal GPS, a second camera for the rear of the vehicle, an additional USB port on the charging plug or WiFi to control the camera via smartphone app are a few examples. A built-in battery or capacitor also ensures that the recording continues if the dash cam is not connected to the cigarette lighter or USB port or an accident has interrupted the power supply.

In the area of ergonomics, the dash cams now have a wide range of aids and operating options, including lane departure warning, start-up assistant or collision warning and a voice control or smartphone app. The additional functions are mostly helpful but also expensive and not necessarily necessary for the car camera to fulfill its purpose.

Many Dashcam charging plugs, like the one from Rollei, also have a USB port for charging mobile devices. Picture: Rollei
