Samsung Galaxy S 20 Ultra 5G (top recommendation)

  • Source: CHIP

    Samsung Galaxy S 20 Ultra 5G

The Samsung Galaxy S 20 Ultra 5G is the champion among smartphones with excellent display, top performance and excellent camera – the mess latte was also set very high for the price.

Benefits

Excellent camera quality with new “single take “function
Disadvantage
battery life in the 120 – Hz mode could be better his

The Samsung Galaxy S 20 Ultra 5G (to price comparison) it has it all: The screen measures a whole 6.9 inch display diagonal – almost tablet dimensions. Samsung uses almost the entire front for the display, instead of a notch there is only a small hole for the front camera. If there is direct light, the display shines with 968 Candela per square meter, under ideal conditions are even 1. 200 cd / m² possible. The contrast is good, the color space coverage is perfect. The new 120 – Hertz mode makes animation more fluid , but costs battery life. Use Full HD Plus resolution and 60 Hz, holds the 5th 00 0 mAh battery 11: 45 hours through. In the 120 – Hz mode reduces the runtime but by 2.5 hours. The service is thanks to the in-house Exynos – 990 – processor excellent. Depending on the variant, you will receive 12 or 16 GByte RAM, both are generous.

    Apple iPhone 11 Per

Apple's iPhone 11 Pro turns out to be a top-of-the-line cell phone in the test hey leave open.

Benefits
Outstanding performance
Very good camera with many functions
Very good battery life
Disadvantage
High price
No microSD card slot
No 3, 5mm headphone jack

Apple's iPhone 11 Per ( in price comparison ) turns out to be a top-of-the-line cell phone that leaves little to be desired. Visually, not much has changed compared to the predecessor, but the inner values are completely convincing: The performance sets new standards again and finally the battery life is so good that users can easily get by a day with it.

As before, the OLED display measures 5.8 inches in the diagonal and sees great looking. The cut-out for the front camera and sensors for FaceID remains unchanged at the top of the display. Unlocking works quickly – but not noticeably faster than with the iPhone X ( for the test ). A triple camera is installed on the back, with which users can not only zoom optically, but also take photos in ultra-wide angle. The photos have natural colors and a very good detailed representation. However, noise is also visible, especially in weaker light. The night mode, which activates by itself, does a good job, but cannot quite work with the Huawei P 30 Keep up with pro.

In one thing makes the iPhone 11 Pro no Android device what before: the performance. That is with Apple's A 13 – Bionic processor with By far the best on the smartphone market. Apple also delivers software updates for up to 5 years. iOS 13 now has a dark mode too protects the battery. But even without dark mode, the iPhone 11 Pro in our test with continuous load around 11 hours by – a great value.

Huawei P 30 Pro (top recommendation)

The Huawei P 30 Pro is an excellent smartphone that convinced in the test above all with an excellent camera.

Benefits
Best photo quality
top performance
Very good battery life & wireless charging
Disadvantage
No classic 3.5mm headphone jack
Video recordings in UHD only with 30 fps
No stereo speaker

The highlight of the Huawei P 30 Pro is undoubtedly the camera. Next to the 40 MP main sensor has the P 30 Pro over one 20 MP ultra wide-angle and via a tele-sensor , which enables a fivefold optical zoom. The photo quality is excellent: in good light the P 30 Pro a sharp, detailed picture with natural colors. And in low light – too. Videos are shot in 4K but unfortunately only with 30 frames per second and not as expected with high-end devices with 60 frames per second.

The 6.5-inch OLED display is very good, but in terms of image quality it cannot quite match the S 10 Plus keep up. Cool: Huawei makes the display itself a speaker. This is nifty, but it also requires that the ear be placed exactly on the shell when making a call. It is a pity that music and videos are only played via the lower mono speaker.

The performance is great and on a par with the high-end competition. You don't have to worry about battery life either. In our online runtime test, the Huawei P 30 Per round 11 hours through, and thanks 40 Watt power supply is it after 84 minutes full again loaded.

LG's good overall package: LG G8s ThinQ

    LG G8s ThinQ (top recommendation)

The LG G8s ThinQ proves to be an excellent high-end cell phone that can compete with Samsung and Huawei's top models.

Benefits
Outstanding performance
Equipment can hardly be improved
Very good OLED display
Disadvantage
Photo quality could be better
“Only” Full HD resolution of the display
gesture control noc h not mature

The LG G8s ThinQ ( in price comparison ) proved itself in the test as an excellent high-end cell phone that can compete with Samsung and Huawei's top models. The performance is great. Inside works a Snapdragon 855. Apps start at lightning speed, and the handling is great. The battery does not run out so quickly either. We have a running time of almost 11 Hours measured. Charging takes more than two and a half hours, but it takes a comparatively long time.

With its strong color and contrast values, the 6.2-inch OLED display display is ideal for HDR films. However, the display cannot offer current features such as an in-display fingerprint sensor. We are also bothered by the strikingly wide notch on the upper edge of the display. In addition to the front camera there is an infrared and a “time of flight” sensor. They not only enable 3D facial recognition or the bokeh effect, but also recognize hand veins and gestures. So you can control the G8s ThinQ without touching it. Sounds cool – but doesn't always work reliably.

The camera cannot really convince compared to the competition from Samsung, Huawei and Apple. In addition to a main sensor with 12 Megapixel is an optical zoom and an ultra wide angle sensor are available. The LG G8s does not have an optical image stabilizer. In daylight, the photos are fine, but there may be more details. The quality drops noticeably in difficult lighting conditions. After all, you shoot videos in 4K with 60 frames per second. Thanks to the depth sensor, you can also apply the bokeh effect live to videos.

There are no defects in the equipment. In addition to inductive charging, water protection and 128 – GBytes of expandable memory , the LG even has a classic jack connection.

Overall, the LG G8s ThinQ is a great high-end smartphone, but does not quite match the competition from Samsung and Huawei in terms of photo quality. Photo: CHIP

Tip from China: Xiaomi Mi Note 10

Xiaomi Mi Note 10 (top recommendation)

Xiaomi Mi Note 10 (Top- Recommendation)

The Xiaomi Mi Note 10 is significantly cheaper than comparable high-end cell phones from the competition and yet offers the same features.

Benefits
Great photo quality and many shooting options
Super battery life, short charging time
Strong 6, 47 – inch OLED display
Disadvantage
No wireless charging
No stereo sound
No certified dust and water protection

The Xiaomi Mi Note 10 is an announcement to the competition. For around 500 Euro ( to price comparison ) it offers features that can only be found in the upper class.

Xiaomi installed in the Mi Note 10 a camera that takes photos with 108 Megapixel can snap. Two zoom levels are available to get closer to a subject. The display measures 6.5 inches in the diagonal. In the 19, 5: 9 format, it is still quite good to use. The display is with a Full HD Plus resolution (1. 080 x 2. 340 pixels) sharp, the OLED panel provides strong colors and contrasts.

Inside the Xiaomi Mi Note 10 comes the Qualcomm Snapdragon 730 G with up to 2.2 GHz clock frequency, a processor of the upper middle class. In particular, the graphics performance is not quite as strong as high-end processors and applications such as 108 – Taking megapixel photos or downloading games takes a little longer, but for a satisfactory everyday use it is sufficient with six GB of RAM. The battery performance is very good. The runtime measured in the test laboratory of 13: 05 hours with continuous use of LTE Internet and display in medium brightness (200 cd / m²) suggests that the Mi Note 10 with moderate use sometimes two days at a time.

As with the other models in the Xiaomi product range, the most important differences to the high-end competition in the Mi Note 10 the missing option for wireless charging as well as the missing certification for water and dust protection.

Sony Xperia XZ2 (top recommendation ung)

The Sony Xperia XZ2 is – apart from individual equipment gaps – a strong overall package at an attractive price.

Benefits
Handy, chic design
Powerful performance & battery life
Good camera
Disadvantage
No headphone jack
Long charging time
Camera without optical image stabilizer

The Sony Xperia XZ2 proves to be very fast and very well equipped in the test. The display quality is great, content is with a full HD resolution with 2. 160 x 1. 080 pixels are sharp and the maximum brightness is excellent. With the strong mobile processor Snapdragon 845 and 4 GB of RAM, you get a very fast system with plenty of power reserves. With his 3rd 180 – mAh battery, the XZ2 also creates a very good runtime , 11: 07 hours were at the end of the clock here. These are the values you would want in a high-end cell phone. By the way: the equally powerful XZ2 Compact (in test) is practically unrivaled in its class and should delight fans of compact cell phones.

Best price performance ratio

Motorola Moto G7 Play (price-performance recommendation)

  • Source: CHIP

Engine ola Moto G7 Play (price-performance recommendation)

The Motorola Moto G7 Play shows good values on a mid-range level in the test – and at an entry-level price.

Benefits
Good performance
Very long battery life
Dual-Sim with memory card expansion
Disadvantage
Not dustproof and waterproof
No wireless charging
Details are sometimes too strong on photos w calibrating drawn

Who has a solid cell phone in a handy size with a really good battery, and only around 130 Euro wants to do with the Moto G7 Play ( in price comparison ) nothing wrong. This currently offers the best price-performance ratio in our leaderboard. However, you have to accept a few technical drawbacks, for example, there is no official water protection and the option for wireless charging. The 13 – Megapixel camera only cuts okay in the test from. Even in the best lighting conditions, the photos lack sharpness and details. The portrait mode is also far from accurate. For the price, the results are still good. The performance is solid with a mid-range processor and manageable 2 GB of RAM. The situation is similar with the equipment. The internal memory coincides with 32 GByte initially modest, but can be expanded using a microSD card.

The 5.7-inch LC display does not have a super high resolution with HD + and does not offer super bright colors and contrasts, but it is really bright.

Cool is the battery life of over 13 Hours – you can usually get through two days without any problems. The charging time is rather long at almost 3 hours. The promised update to Android Q and regular security updates for two years are also strong. A fingerprint sensor, face recognition and dual SIM are also on board.

You get that much cell phone for the money

Anyone looking for a new smartphone is now facing a major challenge: the model selection is huge and every manufacturer wants to score with special features. The price differences between the devices and models are also enormous and partly determine the quality and equipment and performance.

You can get cheap Android smartphones for around 100 Euro – the performance of the device is sufficient, but you shouldn't expect strong performance and attractive photos in this price range. For 200 to 300 Euro there are already a lot of devices that score “good” in our test; Smartphones with a very good rating in our leaderboard start in the price range of about 400 Euro, here you will find some bargains. For the full range of functions with cool extras you need more than 500 Euro in hand.

Mobile phone purchase: what is important?

Often not every user needs all functions. Inexpensive smartphones are sufficient for everyday use. Ultimately, it always depends on what requirements you place on a cell phone and which features do not play a major role for you. We have created a roadmap with points for you to look out for when you next buy your smartphone.

Apple's iOS or Google's Android?

Whether iOS or Android is the better operating system is coming especially on personal preferences and personal experiences. In terms of performance, both operating systems make a good impression. However, in the past few years, Android smartphones have not exactly covered themselves with fame when it comes to keeping smartphones up to date with the latest software. One to a maximum of three system updates can be expected from a new Android smartphone from release. Apple shows more professionalism with five system updates. A modern operating system should not be neglected. On the one hand, apps run reliably, on the other hand, you also get the latest functions.

While iOS only runs on Apple's iPhones, Android can be found on a variety of models from manufacturers such as Samsung, Huawei, LG, Sony and Co. Android is therefore represented in all price ranges, while iOS primarily runs on expensive devices. In addition, in contrast to Apple's iOS, Android is not always the same: Manufacturers change the design of the OS massively and add features that other Android devices do not have. On cheaper devices, including many Motorola and Nokia smartphones, so-called stock Android usually runs (stock): a version of the system that has barely been changed by the manufacturer. Most of the time, these devices lack features that are available on smartphones with their own user interface, but the system performance benefits, which is clearly an advantage for cheaper devices with weaker hardware. These devices in particular often run an Android One or Android Go version.

  • Android One is an unchanged Android version. If it is installed on a smartphone, the buyer is guaranteed two years of system updates and three years of security updates. So Google wants to counteract its update problem a little.
  • Android Go is a very slimmed down version of the classic Android. It does not have quite as many functions, but it uses significantly less memory and requires hardly any system resources to run smoothly. This Android version also comes with pre-installed Go versions of some apps. So Gmail is replaced by Gmail Go, Google Maps by Maps Go and so on. These apps also require less storage space, but they also do not have all the functions of the original app.

What benefits do I have?

Current flagships are always equipped with the latest, most powerful processor and thus deliver first-class performance. However, if you are not playing complex 3D games on your mobile phone, you will not really need this service and can get the money for models from at least 700 save euro. Tip: Older flagship cell phones usually have a slightly weaker performance than current models, but are more priced at a mid-range level. By the way: a smartphone is not necessarily faster if it has a gigantic working memory. For iOS, a 3 GB working memory is sufficient for smooth operation, for Android from 4 GB. A device with 8, 10 or even 12 Gigabyte RAM costs significantly more, but offers no significant advantage in performance.

How much storage space do I need?

Depending on what you want to use your smartphone for, you have to be careful when it comes to storage. Because if you install a lot of applications and games or take a lot of photos and videos and download music, the memory fills up quickly. A smartphone should currently at least 32 GByte internal memory – and with this rather small capacity still have an additional slot for memory cards To be able to store data such as music, films and photos on it. Smartphones without memory card expansion should at least 64 Bring GByte. If you take a lot of photos and films, here are even 128 GByte recommended.

How much value do I put on the camera?

How good is the camera quality of a Smartp hones is not necessarily evident from the technical data. Although you can use guide values such as a resolution of at least 12 Pay attention to megapixels, autofocus and optical image stabilizer, but such key data are not really meaningful. A smartphone with 4 sensors and 48 Megapixel does not necessarily take better photos than a smartphone with a single sensor and 12 Megapixels. In our leaderboard it is striking that the more expensive the smartphone is, the higher the likelihood that a good camera has been installed and that software that is properly matched to the technology will be used. There are exceptions, but these are rather rare. But if you do not want to buy the best and most expensive smartphone right away, you will still drive very well with the mid-range: These cell phones sometimes snap good photos at an acceptable price. How the smartphones do in this discipline can be seen in the CHIP leaderboard.

Which display should it be?

The good news first: The display technology is now so far that you no longer have to expect a failure with current smartphones – a few years ago it looked very different. No matter which price range you choose, the display should deliver at least one usable image. Still, there are a few differences that you should be aware of. The resolution or pixel density should not be below 330 ppi, otherwise podium artifacts on texts and fine elements are noticeable. From 400 ppi the sharpness of the image no longer gives any reason for criticism; more is not necessary in practice because the difference is not visible.

The size of the display depends solely on your preferences. Should the smartphone still fit in your pocket or do you want the largest possible picture for reading and watching films? We perceive mobile phones with displays up to 5 inches as compact, 5 to 6 inches is now normal; if the screens are even larger, transportation in your pocket will be scarce. A good compromise are smartphones in the 18: 9 format: These devices offer one Large picture in a relatively narrow form factor, so that the dimensions of a 5.5-inch cell phone correspond approximately to those of a classic 5-inch smartphone.

How much battery do I need?

The battery capacity says something about the runtime of a cell phone only to a limited extent. In addition to the display's brightness, resolution and refresh rate, high performance also requires a lot of battery capacity. In general, it can still be said that from 3. 00 0 mAh usually shouldn't get any problems. If you are looking for a smartphone that should last a long time, you are welcome to use 4. 00 0 mAh or you take a device with a rather small display. Entry-level and mid-range smartphones are the right choice here.

How much equipment do I need?

WLAN and Bluetooth are now part of the basic equipment of a cell phone. NFC is no longer just found in flagship devices. If a headphone jack is indispensable for you, you now have to keep your eyes open, because more and more top smartphones come without a jack connection. If you have two different SIM cards for private and business purposes, you should make sure that your device is dual-SIM capable. Wireless charging is mostly installed in the more expensive devices, but many users can do without it.

In the Detailed view of our leaderboard you will find all relevant information about the smartphones we tested. You can also sort the leaderboard according to categories and be guided by individual requirements. Get in the individual test reports You information about the design and feel of the devices.

Android One and Android Go: All information about the Android variants

This is how we test smartphones

Our CHIP mobile phone test procedure has been passed from five categories. Everyone goes with 20 percent in the overall rating.

  • Power
  • display
  • Battery pack
  • Camera
  • Furnishing

In this Beitra g you will find an exact one Description of how we test each category.

After we have carried out all measurements and evaluated all relevant aspects of the device, we list a standardization for each of the five rating categories and for all models tested 100 points through. This means that the best smartphone in a rating category receives internally 100 points, the others correspondingly less linear. For better understanding, we convert this score into decimal and school grades, which we then output in the leaderboard.

100 points correspond to the grade very good (1.0). If, for example, a cell phone in the camera rating 80 percent or a good (2.2), then this value always refers to the best device from the test field. For this reason, a model that, for example, achieved the best value in the performance category at the time of testing, will look worse at a later time as soon as faster models have been tested.

In addition to the display, battery, camera and performance, we also evaluate the equipment of a cell phone. Photo: CHIP
