Fernseher kaufen: Worauf Sie achten sollten

4K TVs are the most popular TV sets – other resolutions hardly play a role in practice and in our tests. We will tell you why this is the case and name recommended 4K televisions like our test winner and the price tip. What you should pay attention to when buying a TV, we say in the video.

4K TV test 2020: Our purchase recommendations

A few years ago, 4K televisions were extremely expensive – but that has changed fundamentally. You can now get 4K televisions in all price ranges, from the affordable entry-level model with a compact screen to the extravagant and expensive giant television. In contrast to monitors, for example, 4K resolution has established itself relatively quickly as the standard in the television market – you hardly get models with a different number of pixels. And in our opinion that doesn't matter: We recommend that most users use a 4K television, more on that below.

You can see a selection of recommended devices from our extensive tests in the table, then we explain what distinguishes the individual devices and also go on a compact TV tip with 43 – inch screen on. We also say why we advise you to buy a 4K TV when a new purchase is due.

Detailed TV buying advice: You should know these features

Best TV: Panasonic GZW 2004

  • TX-55GZW2004

    Source: Offer from BestCheck.de

    Panasonic GZW 2004 – 55 Inch

The Panasonic GZW 2004 is an OLED television with a top Picture quality. The TV shines bright, is excellently calibrated, has a fantastic color display.

  • TX-65GZW2004

    Source: BestCheck.de offer

    Panasonic GZW 2004 – 65 Inch

The Panasonic GZW 2004 is an OLED television with top picture quality. We had the 55 – inch version in test, with 65 – inch screen but the device should be just as good.

Benefits
Outstanding image quality
Perfect ergonomics
Rich sound with sound bar
Disadvantage
High selling price
Slightly restricted Smart TV OS
Mediocre energy efficiency

A better picture than the Panasonic GZW 2004 has currently no other 4K TV in the test. The OLED TV shines brightly, is excellently calibrated, has a fantastic color display and very rich contrasts. We also found the UHD TV impressive in our subjective tests, in which we judged the display of Full HD Blu-rays and UHD-HDR films. At best, the detail display in very dark scenes is in need of minimal improvement: in some cases, dark gray gradations in the typical OLED black disappear. For this is the Panasonic GZW 2004 excellently equipped and still offers a decent sound quality thanks to Dolby Upfiring speaker for Dolby Atmos. The price for the quality offered is quite a bit.

    LG C9 – 65 Inch

The LG C9 scores with an equally fantastic image quality. We had the 55 – inch version in test, with 65 – inch screen but the device should be just as good.

Benefits
Nice pic
Chic design
HDMI 2.1
Disadvantage
Large-area white could be lighter
Slight loss of detail in dark scenes

In terms of image quality only slightly worse positioned, but to have significantly cheaper is LG's OLED 4K TV C9 . Its contrast is also great, the top brightness and color are excellent – but not quite on the level of the Panasonic GZW 2004. The LG C9 also swallowed up some details in dark scenes in the test, but the bottom line is still an impressive picture. It pleases with solid sound quality and also excellent equipment.

    Samsung Q 90 R – 55 Inch

The Samsung Q 90 R is a top-class LCD TV. We had the 65 – inch version in the test, but also with 55 – inch screen should be the Q 90 R be very strong. However, the smaller model has fewer dimming zones.

  • GQ65Q90RGT

    Source: BestCheck.de offer

    Samsung Q 90 R – 65 Inch

The Samsung Q 90 R is a top-class LCD TV. It shines extremely brightly and has an excellent anti-reflection coating, which means that it ensures uncluttered viewing pleasure even in bright daylight.

Benefits
Excellent image quality
Strong equipment
Comfortable operation
Disadvantage
No Dolby Vision
No DTS
Native contrast could be a little better

If you are looking for a television with LCD technology, you will receive the Samsung Q 90 R an excellent TV. It shines extremely brightly and hardly reflects even in bright daylight – this ensures clear viewing pleasure. The colors are full and rich, the contrast is good – here, however, it is easy to overlook compared to OLED devices in darkened rooms. It darkens black film bars and larger areas excellently, but the contrast in small details could be a bit better. The viewing angle stability is even decent for an LCD TV. The sound quality is solid, the equipment hardly gives a reason for criticism – some users might miss DTS.

    LG SM 82007 LA – 55 Inch

The LG SM 82007 LA offers a lot of picture area with good picture quality for the money. We had the 65 – inch version in the test, but do not expect any significant changes in the smaller model.

    LG SM 82007 LA – 65 Inch

The LG SM 82007 LA offers a lot Image area with good image quality for the money. You may not expect an HDR experience, but the performance is strong for the price.

Benefits
Strong price-performance ratio
Good picture
Very good energy efficiency
Disadvantage
Equipment and sound could be better
Limited HDR pleasure

If you are looking for a cheap device , which offers a lot of picture space for the money with good quality, then we recommend the LG SM 82007 LA . Apart from the only satisfactory sound quality, the affordable 4K TV from LG convinces in all categories with at least good performance. You may not expect any miracles, but the display is rock solid, especially for classic TV and Blu-ray shows. Due to the mediocre contrast and the not too high peak brightness, HDR films lack pizzazz. Price-conscious buyers are still served well here.

Top compact TV: Samsung Q 60 R

  • GQ43Q60RGT

    Source: BestCheck.de offer

    Samsung Q 60 R – 43 Inch

The Samsung Q 60 R is a good TV for Blu-ray and TV viewing. For HDR it lacks contrast and peak brightness – but overall the image quality is solid.

  • GQ49Q60RGT

    Source: BestCheck.de offer

    Samsung Q 60 R – 49 Inch

The Samsung Q 60 R is a good TV for Blu-ray – and TV shows – HDR does not come into play here.

Benefits
Very stable viewing angle
Still decent picture quality
Disadvantage
checkerboard contrast could be better
Peak brightness not suitable for HDR

The Samsung Q 60 R with a 43 Inch 4K display leaves a good impression in the test. Unlike the larger models (see the Test of the 55 – inch version ) Samsung does not use a VA panel here, but a PLS display – the technology corresponds to the more familiar IPS. The 43 – Zoller is very stable in viewing angles, but has only a mediocre contrast because it is neither very bright nor very dark. For standard Blu-rays and TV shows, the picture is fine. Unfortunately, HDR material is not particularly effective. Practical: In addition to the USB recording option, the device has a double tuner.

Why Buy 4K TVs?

There is currently no way around a 4K television. This is the most common resolution of most televisions at the moment, so the offer is large. In addition, the film industry uses this resolution, streaming services anyway – only TV stations in Germany are lagging behind. You can only find other resolutions in the absolute entry-level segment – Full HD or even simple HD is sometimes used – as well as in some high-end models. Samsung in particular is trying to draw attention to 8K TVs.

But for 8K there will be no content for the foreseeable future – apart from a few demo material. Likewise, there is no 8K Blu-ray standard, and the effort to make films in 8K – especially special effects in 8K – is huge, the bandwidth requirements for streaming services are also powerful. In short: With 4K you will be very well served for large TV sets for the foreseeable future. Apart from the often higher price, there is nothing wrong with buying an 8K high-end television.

Small 4K TVs make sense?

At the lower end of the spectrum we already advise against 40 inch screen size to a 4K TV. Although you will not see any relevant sharpness difference to a Full HD model with a normal seat distance, the most important technical improvements will be incorporated into the models with the 4K panel. This includes – depending on the model – HDR capability with higher brightness and extended color space. So you potentially get better overall picture quality.

There is also plenty of suitable content for 4K televisions. For example, the major streaming services such as Netflix and Amazon Prime Video transmit their content at best in 4K resolution and HDR. And if you are looking for an even better image quality or have a poor internet connection, you will get Ultra HD Blu-rays. However, the market here is unfortunately significantly smaller than that for normal Full HD Blu-rays, which in turn is smaller than the DVD market. With the introduction of the Playstation 5 and Xbox Series X, the number of UHD Blu-ray players will increase significantly.

In Germany, 4K is also rare on regular television , which is mainly because there is little incentive for TV stations to switch to 4K. Here you usually have to make do with Full HD, but there are some sports or special programs in 4K. In our tests, we evaluated how well 4K televisions upscale lower-resolution content to their image resolution. There are some slight differences here, but you can always display the usual lower resolutions with a 4K television.

4K or Ultra HD

4K by the way denotes a resolution of 4.0 96 x (second pixels – but this does not match the aspect ratio of modern 16 – to-9 TV because it is a little wider. 4K televisions therefore have a resolution of 3. 840 x (second pixels. This is called Ultra HD or UHD for short. Many users use 4K and UHD synonymously.

What is a 4K TV?

A 4K television has an image area with a resolution of 3. 840 from 2. 160 pixels. That corresponds to four times the Full HD resolution. In the meantime, 4K resolution has become standard for televisions and is available in every price range.

What is the difference between 4K and Ultra HD?

Strictly speaking, 4K stands for a resolution of 4.0 96 x 2. 160 pixels; however, this results in an unusually wide aspect ratio for televisions. So-called 4K televisions therefore have 3. 840 x 2. 160 pixels and therefore one 16 – to-9 aspect ratio. 4K and Ultra HD are often used interchangeably.

What is the best resolution for TV?

The current highest resolution for televisions is 8K or UHD-II with 7. 680 x 4. 320 Pixel. At the moment there is hardly any content for it, so the benefits are limited. We advise most users to buy a 4K TV.
