100 YEARS AGO
Preliminary arrangements to erect a Co-operative Creamery in Oxbow are being completed. The required number of shares have been disposed of to warrant the provisional officers of this enterprise to outline a definite plan of action, and undoubtedly the work of putting up ice, and the securing of a site. The arrangements for permanent buildings will immediately be commenced.
Isaic Sair has been in this district during the past three weeks buying livestock – principally horses. Mr. Sair has shipped a carload to Estevan, and another to Winnipeg, and is still buying. Isaac believes that the Oxbow district still holds the red ribbon for good horseflesh and cattle.
It is believed by many that there will be a boom in Frobisher real estate as soon as the Grand Trunk Pacific steel is laid through that place – this to take place early this spring.
Glen Ewen News - Fred Rodgers expects to move his large gasoline engine into town next week, when he will do feed chopping for the local trade. The engine and chopper will be installed in the old Preston lumber yard.
75 YEARS AGO
Jim Stewart, of the Coldridge district, in a splendid impersonation of Harry Lauder, was the winner of the local amateur contest, held by the Oxbow Hockey Club in the King Edward Hall. Alan Shay, in very clever imitations of farm animals, engines, motors, etc., was voted into second place, while the girls of the Youth Training School captured third spot with an operetta in a gypsy setting. About 20 people participated in the contest, and the hall was almost completely filled with spectators.
Eighty-four local citizens have caught the bonspiel spirit this week, as the community bonspiel is underway. With three draws daily the curling rink is the centre of attraction and curling chatter is the chief topic of the day. There will be four events, with two prizes in each.
Dick Barker, who left recently for a much-needed vacation in California, sent us a card from Tijuana, Mexico, which he has included in his tour. Dick reports the weather very warm and lovely, and that he is enjoying his holiday immensely.
Glen Ewen News – The town and district were well represented at the dance held in Hill’s hall. Good music, good floor, and the fact that the proceeds, which amounted to $30 were being used for charitable purposes, all contributed to a most successful and enjoyable event.
This morning an irate citizen waited on us with a shotgun in one hand and a baseball bat in the other. He demanded an apology for an overdue account which we had mailed him. We had added a stinging note to the dunner which he very much resented. Observing a very sinister glint in his eye, we were very meek for a moment, but in a few minutes we introduced him to the guillotine and produced convincing evidence of just how we handle people who come into our office other than in a prayerful mood. He paid his account and we parted good friends.
50 YEARS AGO
Two rinks of Oxbow curlers travelled to Minot for a friendly game of curling. The local rinks won both games on their weekend jaunt. Bus Underhill defeated a Minot rink by a score of 14 to 3 and a quartet, skipped by Ray Workman won their game against the host Minot club 10 to 5. Playing with Underhill were Osborne Evans, Ken Barber and Cyril Avery; on the Workman rink were Doug McLeod, Don Fletcher and a member of the Minot club.
Town Clerk D.R. Smith was appointed building inspector for the town, a position created as a result of the building bylaw passed several weeks ago.
Mr. Ed Mohr of Saskatoon has accepted the position of accountant at the Royal Bank of Canada, Oxbow branch. Mr. Garth Bale, who has been accountant here for the past 2 1/2 years, has been transferred to the accountant’s department of the Royal Bank in Regina.
Another recent addition to the staff at the local bank is Mr. Ross Bison, formerly of Craik.
Mr. and Mrs. Jos. Talpash received the good news recently concerning their son, Victor, who has been promoted to the position of manager of Eaton’s camera department at New Westminster, B.C. Victor began as sales clerk with Eatons just one year ago.
