As the hours ticked on over without power, Staff, parents and students in the Prairie South School Division were 'in the dark' literally, about plans for school and final exams that were scheduled to begin on Monday, January 25.
After reports spread through the community that Coronach and area communities should prepare for 48 to 72 hours without power, it became clear that there would be no lights on in the school on Monday morning.
After two days without power, the Prairie South School Division cancelled classes and final exams on Monday in the schools in the division without power.
On Sunday afternoon, Coronach School staff and parents began calling around telling students that classes were off, as well as the test scheduled for Monday.
The task of notifying families of the closure was a daunting one as many people did not have phones that rang, there was no cell service and many people were not at home, having went to friends and neighbours who had heat.
Grade 12 students were told that unofficially, they would be writing their English departamental at a Ministry of Education appointed date, likely in March. The Grade 10 and 11 exams would be rescheduled when power returned.
Classes resumed at the Coronach school on Tuesday morning. The first exams were held at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday.
The Grade 12 English departamental exam will be written in March, while the Grade 10 and 11 Monday exams were written Thursday morning, in addition to the regularly scheduled exams on Thursday afternoon.
On Thursday morning, SaskPower announced a planned power outage for Thursday, January 28 from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., families were once again wondering the plans for the classes.
On Wednesday afternoon, the Coronach School announced their plan to close the school. All scheduled exams for Thursday, including the Grade 12 Biology final were rescheduled for Monday.
Students in the division had no classes on Friday, January 29 as was part of the original school calendar.
