Ceylon and the R.M. of the Gap No. 39: A Century of History

Ceylon’s train station once would have been a hub of activity as freight and passengers steamed into town. It was used less and less following Word War Two, and was eventually torn down in 1976.

Ceylon once had a proud skyline of five elevators, but one by one they were all torn down as the rail lines cut their service. The Wheat Pool elevator was the last to be torn down in 2000.

Hardy School, and the country schools of the R.M. of the Gap, were centers of social activity in the first decades of the R.M. of the Gap.

The Demo Derby and Tractor Pull has become a tradition in Ceylon in recent years, and the event will certainly add some excitement to the Homecoming celebration in Ceylon from June 24 - 26th. Handout Photo by Taras Lagun

The building of the Ceylon Dam was a major work project during the Depression of the 1930s. The beautiful regional park was added later, in the 1960s.
